Golden Circle

On the way back to Reykjavík we made a part of the “Golden Circle”. Here are some tourist highlights, such as the Great Geyser, namesake for all other springs, the waterfall Gulfoss, the Þingvellir National Park. The exciting geology of the region goes back to the location directly between the North American and Eurasian continental plate: The Þingvellir National Park is located on the rift valley, which runs through the whole country. Iceland is the only country where this ditch – the Mid-Atlantic Ridge – runs above sea level. This can be seen in many places, the landscape has numerous rifts, ditches and cracks. In one of these cracks is filled with water from a distant glacier, which is so clear that tourists scuba dive and snorkel in it.

Due to the many attractions it is quite crowded and we were glad that there was not so much hustle and bustle everywhere in Iceland.
